Second MetroRapid Line Set to Launch August 24

metrorapid-3videoAug. 18, 2014 – Capital Metro is putting the final touches on its new MetroRapid 803 service as it prepares for the official launch on Sunday, Aug. 24. The new route will offer riders frequent service along Burnet, Guadalupe, Lavaca and South Lamar, from The Domain to Westgate Mall via UT and downtown. The service will be introduced as a part of the agency’s Fall Service Changes.

Service will run weekdays from 5 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

 

The new 15-mile route will make stops at 34 new stations, and 12 existing ones shared with Route 801 in downtown Austin along the Guadalupe and Lavaca corridors. All MetroRapid stations have real-time digital signage that show arrival times of the next two vehicles, canopies, bench seating and lighting.

Riders will be able to access many well-known destinations when service begins, including the UT Research Campus (JJ Pickle), The Domain, Central Market North, Seton Medical Center, the museum district, ACC Rio Grande, downtown Austin, the University of Texas main campus, the State Capitol, Barton Springs/Zach Scott Theater, Seaholm, Alamo Drafthouse Lamar Square and Westgate Mall.

A single ride on MetroRapid costs $1.50. Riders can also choose to purchase a Day Pass for $3.00, 7-Day Pass for $13.50 or 31-Day Pass for $49.50. UT and ACC students and staff, and also city of Austin employees, ride for free with valid ID due to existing partnerships with Capital Metro.

MetroRapid 803 Service Full-Scale Field Testing July 15

0021-Brio PhotographyCapital Metro’s new MetroRapid Route 803 fleet will hit the streets of Austin in full force on Tuesday, July 15, in preparation for the launch of the second line of MetroRapid service on August 24.

The field test will take place from 4:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will cover the entire 15-mile length of Route 803. The distinctive red and silver vehicles will travel along North Burnet and South Lamar from The Domain to Westgate Mall via UT and downtown. Although the vehicles will stop at all stations (12 shared downtown with Route 801), passengers will not be able to board.

Destinations along the future route? The UT Research Campus (JJ Pickle), The Domain, Central Market North, Seton Medical Center, the museum district, ACC Rio Grande, downtown Austin, the University of Texas main campus, the State Capitol, Barton Springs/Zach Scott Theater, Seaholm and Westgate Mall.

Route 803 will complement the existing service on Route 3, providing more frequent service to the same area, and convenient connections to MetroRapid 801 service and other bus routes downtown. Features of the service include covered and well-lit high-tech stations offering real-time arrival information, and upgraded vehicles with enhanced interiors and free onboard Wi-Fi.

MetroRapid Route 801 North Lamar/South Congress began service Jan. 26, 2014 and operates using 60-foot vehicles.

juneteenth_bus_mockup_driver_sideOn Saturday, June 21, Capital Metro will join the Central Texas Juneteenth Committee in its annual Juneteenth celebration.

The Juneteenth Historical Parade, beginning at 10 a.m., will travel along east Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, Chicon, Rosewood and finish at Rosewood Park.

Riders should take note that routes listed above will be detoured around the parade route on June 21, due to street closures beginning at 7 a.m.

As the Capital Metro railroad tracks bisect Rosewood Park, the agency strongly urges the community to stay off the tracks and only cross at dedicated crossings. MetroRail begins service on Saturday, June 21 at 4 p.m., but festival goers should always expect a train, as freight trains may be in service.
