Put together your own Transit Adventure in honor of National Burger Day, celebrated on May 28. Don’t forget to tell us about how you #TryTransitATX on Twitter!
Dirty Martins: This greasy spoon just north of UT campus has been satisfying the guilty pleasures of students (and all walks of life) since 1926. There might not be dirt floors and open flame grills anymore, but the burgers and sides are still classically unpretentious (with no grass-fed menu descriptions), but plenty of flavor (and grease). Sit at the counter to watch the longtime short order chefs at work at the grill, flipping hundreds of burgers, patty melts, and chicken fried steak sandwiches for hungry die-hards. Plus, the iconic Austin movie, Dazed and Confused, was partially filmed here!
Routes: 1, 3, 19, 22, 801, 803 will get you there!
Hut’s: Known to be another Matthew McConaughey favorite, Hut’s, which originally opened as a drive-thru back 1939, is located in the popular West Sixth entertainment district. Get ready for onion rings and Hamburger Happy Hours on Wednesday nights — two burgers for the price of one!
Routes: 4, 21, 22, 338 will get you there!
Sandy’s: An Austin original since 1946, the drive-thru or dine-in burger shack has an old-fashioned menu that also features incredible milkshakes and sundaes. Routes: 1, 5, 7, 10, 20, 30, 801 will get you there!
P.Terry’s: Take the 803 to the Barton Springs Station and walk up to P.Terry’s Burger Stand on your way to Zilker. A local Austin burger stand, P.Terry’s prides itself on providing customers the freshest and best ingredients. While we know its hamburger day – we also secretly love their Chicken Burger, shhh!! pterrys.com
Hat Creek Burger Company: The MetroRapid 803 North Loop Station drops off right next to Hat Creek’s first brick and mortar location. With roots as a food trailer, Hat Creek has been expanding its reach with four locations throughout Central Texas. The Burnet Road location has a family-friendly playground with some of the best slides in town. hatcreekburgers.com
