A Message from State Representative Eddie Rodriguez
For many, the holiday spirit means getting together with friends and family, celebrating and having a good time. This is especially true on New Year’s Eve in Austin, where there are abundant options for fun and festivities.
How will you fulfill your invitations to all of these celebrations in a timely and safe manner?
With so many choices to get around safely in Austin these days, Capital Metro is a very reliable option. Ridesharing options are good, but transit is even better. New Year’s Eve is one of the most dangerous times to be in a car on the road due to impaired driving, so taking the train or the bus is by far your best bet.
This holiday season, I’m thankful that for the fourth year in a row, Capital Metro has answered the call by ATX Safer Streets to provide better late night transportation service. Cap Metro will once again offer expanded – and FREE – service on MetroRail, MetroRapid and MetroBus on New Year’s Eve.
Cap Metro routes can connect you to the best of Austin – whether you evening has you dining at the Domain, strolling South Congress or dancing downtown to your favorite band – you can rely on transit to get you to and from your destinations. And by using Cap Metro’s new smartphone app, you can get real-time info – even if your plans evolve throughout the evening.
On New Year’s Eve, the following expanded services will be available:
- Service on MetroRail will be free after 6:00 p.m., with the last train leaving the Downtown Station at 2:30 a.m.
- Likewise, MetroRapid will be running later hours and free after 6:00 p.m., with final departures from the downtown stations along Guadalupe and Lavaca at 2:30 a.m.
- Also available are five Night Owl routes that travel to and from Sixth and Congress every 30 minutes, from midnight until 3 a.m.
- Local MetroBus service will operate a regular “weekday” schedule New Year’s Eve, giving riders many late night travel options to get them to and from festivities.
When you’re making your New Year’s plans, don’t forget to also make your first resolution be a safe way home.
