Nerves of Steel

Okay, here’s the situation: you’re driving down the street in the right lane minding your own business when suddenly, without warning, the car next to you in the left lane cuts right in front of you to make a right turn. Oh, and did I mention that you’re driving a 30,000 pound vehicle carrying the most precious of cargo (passengers)? And if you’re somehow lucky or skilled enough to avoid hitting the car, what about the two light poles in your path as you swerve?

Well, if that happened to you or me, our hearts would probably be pounding and we’d need to regain our composure before continuing our trip. But that’s all in a day’s work for bus operators like Edward Swan. Let me tell you, this guy is one cool customer.

Check out this story from Fox-7 last night:

I was very pleased to see this story on Fox 7 last night. I don’t think that APD does enough….okay, I don’t think APD does hardly anything….to be on the lookout for drivers who cut off CM buses and to issue citations to them. Just between the Capitol and Cesar Chavez I’ve been in countless near-collisions caused by drivers who make right turns in front of CM buses from the inside lane.

These maneuvers (1) are patently illegal and (2) pose a serious risk of harm to CM bus riders.

I would like to see CM management take up this issue with APD and insist on some surveillance and enforcement, before someone gets seriously hurt. It’s only a matter of time before that happens.
