First Night Art Bus

Check out the new piece of art that will soon be rolling around Austin.  This uniquely decorated bus was unveiled this morning at the Long Center during a press conference promoting First Night Austin 2010. The art bus will be featured in the 5th annual New Year’s Eve celebration in downtown Austin.

The artwork was created by high school students from Club Arthouse at the direction of local artist Cybil Guess. 3M generously donated the materials for the bus wrap.

The bus will be included in the First Night Austin Grand Procession parade and parked at the event for a special performance.

And, what’s the best way to get to First Night? By riding Capital Metro, of course. There are many routes that can help get you and your family to and from the event. Visit our web site to plan your trip.

Thanks to First Night Austin, 3M and the artists for working with us to create such a fantastic display of Austin’s creative community.

I like this, it’s reminiscent of the New York City subways “back in the day.”

Not to be Scrooge-like, but I’d like to repeat my call to take the “HAPPY HOLIDAYS” greetings off the electronic signs on the buses. Yesterday afternoon I stood at the corner of 15th and Lavaca waiting for the 1 or the 101, looking directly into the sun, couldn’t see a damned thing, bus finally comes close enough that I can see which bus it is, and lo-and-behold, it’s the “HAPPY HOLIDAYS” bus.

    Makes me nuts.

Two weeks from now, it’ll probably be the “HOOK ‘EM HORNS” bus.

Kelly, I’m going to guess that you don’t have a vision impairment. For those of us who have a hard time reading the signs, it’s even harder when the signs aren’t telling us what the signs were intended to tell us.
