Leo, there are some of us who are against this commuter rail line because it prevents better rail (the light rail route a la 2000) from ever being built. Basically, we give up, forever, the chance to carry almost 50,000 people per day directly to UT, the Capitol, and the parts of downtown most people work in so we can have this train that will carry, MAYBE, 1500 people per day straight to shuttle-buses.

See, here's what this native New Yorker loves about living in Austin, and even about riding Capital Metro. I hopped off the 1 this morning at 14th and Lavaca, and Leo was right behind it driving the 5. I've ridden with Leo before, he recognized me from the blog and we've chatted often. So this morning Leo stops his bus at 14th and Lavaca, with nobody getting on or off, just to open the door and give me a shout out.

This would never happen in New York. You might never see the same bus driver or subway conductor twice.

As invested as New Yorkers are in their transit system, we can feel invested too. In even a better way.

Please don't hassle Leo for making an unscheduled stop. LOL

And Leo, right on, brother. Right on.

vin,

Agreed it's weird if you're not familiar with it - but it's common in other cities with half-hearted rail service like this and pre-existing local bus. The shuttles in South Florida are branded differently and fare-free; the local buses (those few that exist) are standard buses, fares and all, that happen to go to a Tri-Rail station.
